David Harrison’s association with Hampshire golf started in the County Boys team in 1954 and Youth team in 1955. It was through the Hampshire teams that he was seen at a national level and he represented England Boys in 1954 and England Youths in 1955 before joining the RAF as a National Serviceman. He won the RAF Championships in 1957 & 1958 (at a time when there were many players who went on to gain International honours) and played in the winning RAF teams in the 1957 & 1958 Inter-Services Championships. It has been said on many occasions that David is the best player not to have represented his country at full international level.
Following his time in the RAF, he went on to Oxford University where he gained a Golfing Blue and for whom he played between 1958 and 1961. After Oxford, he won the County Championship a record 6 times (1965, 1969, 1970, 1973, 1974 & 1976), was County Captain in 1970, was the Hampshire Alliance Champion in 1978 and played in the Hampshire team for 20 years. He won the Golf Illustrated Vase (won by Bobby Jones in 1930) in 1961 & 1970. He was the English Seniors (over-60s) Champion in 1997.
David has been a prolific golf administrator and he was elected President of the Hampshire Golf Union and President of the EGU in 1992 and Captain of the R&A in 2007.
He was awarded the OBE for ‘Services to Golf’ in 2010.
